To be an effective ally to the LGBTQ+ community, it's essential to genuinely accept and validate their gender and sexual identities. While acceptance is a cornerstone of allyship and often viewed as the most critical aspect, it's not enough on its own. While acceptance is a foundational step in allyship, taking action also matters.
Taking action in support of LGBTQ+ individuals begins with personal education on the issues they face in the community. Being a good ally means addressing both interpersonal and systemic biases, even if it's challenging or may have negative repercussions. Taking action can be the most crucial aspect of allyship for boosting the well-being of LGBTQ+ individuals.
Being humble in allyship means genuinely learning about LGBTQ+ issues rather than just trying to appear supportive. It's essential to listen actively when diversity and inclusion topics arise, rather than merely managing perceptions.
The three ways we've outlined above on how to be an ally to the LGBTQ+ community are founded in the research performed by Jacqueline M. Chen and Samantha Joel, and published in the Harvard Business Review on April 12, 2023.
